I first read about Kaziranga in a storybook.
It was a story about a forest ranger, trying to stop a group of poachers smuggling one-horned rhinos from Kaziranga, across the borders of Assam into China. A gripping tale of action, romance, gunfights, jeep chases, and a ton of rhino's.
Legend has it that in ancient Chinese medicine, rhino horns were mixed with other natural ingredients for treating fever or relieving the symptoms of arthritis and gout. The list also included: headaches, hallucinations, high blood pressure, typhoid, snakebite, food poisoning and last but not the least - a cure for erectile dysfunction.
The truth is, because of their perceived medicinal value, rhinos have been poached and killed mercilessly for centuries now, only to be sold in the black markets of South Africa and Asia to wealthy Chinese and Vietnamese buyers. According to a BBC report, 100gm of rhino horn retails at about $6000 in the black market today, which kind of makes it more expensive than gold!
National Geographic did a fantastic piece on this topic a few years back. You can read it here.
